We are planning to sell our home in the near future. We have decided to use a real estate professional to assist with the selling of our home. Our question is, is there a set rate that REALTORS® charge for commission.

First of all let me applaud your choice to use a REALTOR® to assist you in selling your home. I am very sure you will not be disappointed in your decision. Your question is a valid one, but all I can tell you it is the policy of each Brokerage to provide guidance regarding the amount of commission you will be charged. There is not a standard rate of commission in our community as it would be viewed as the real estate industry getting together to set a certain price for service in an open market place. The commission you are charged is an agreement between you, your REALTOR®, and the Brokerage that individual works for, and will be clearly indicated on your contract to sell your home. While on the subject of commission it needs to be said that today’s REALTOR® is a professional. They have to abide by strict educational requirements, constantly update their skills, adhere to industry, professional, and personal standards, and work long hours to ensure that their clients are best served by their actions. You would sooner take your car to a garage and tell them how much you will pay them to service your car, so why not afford the same courtesy to your REALTOR®?
